Periodontal disease is very common. In fact, every single person has bacteria in their mouth, along with mucus and other particles. Although brushing and flossing help to get rid of this, if we do not get every spot or neglect our teeth at all, plaque can form. This can only be removed from a professional cleaning.

When plaque and tartar stay on your teeth for a long period of time, the harmful bacteria in your mouth can become inflamed on the gums, causing gingivitis.

When gingivitis is not treated, it can advance to periodontal disease. This is when the gums pull away from the teeth and form spaces, called pockets, which can become infected.

There are many reasons why people can get periodontal disease. The most common reason is because patients are not brushing and flossing their teeth regularly. People who smoke, women and girls that are going through hormonal changes, and people with diabetes are more likely to suffer from the disease. Unfortunately, some medications can reduce the amount of saliva in the mouth, making your mouth more likely to get gum disease.
