Endodontics is a specialized form of dentistry that concentrates on the treatment and study of the inside of the teeth, mostly the tooth pulp itself. The various procedures and therapies that are involved in the practice of endodontics are designed to help or heal injuries, trauma or decay of the interiors of teeth, and are generally performed on broken or cracked teeth. The most common procedure in endodontics is “root canal therapy,” a procedure in which the root of a damaged tooth (containing the nerves and surrounding tissue) is removed in order to save the exterior of the tooth itself. Root canal therapy is not nearly as painful as it is assumed to be, and the majority of fear regarding root canal therapy is due to assumptions of pain levels that have been based on past experiences of patients many years ago when the procedure was not as evolved. Today’s endodontic procedures are virtually pain free, and can be compared to the filling of a cavity.
