When it comes to preventing a dental emergency and keeping your teeth and gums healthy, routine oral care goes a long way. Routine dental care does not just reduce the odds of a person having a dental emergency, it also saves them hordes of money over the course of their lives.
Major dental issues like an infected pulp or a tooth falling out due to decay do not happen overnight. These start from a tiny cavity that eventually expands enough to severely damage a tooth. A filling could have stopped the cavity in its tracks, and preventative measures like good oral hygiene and treatments like dental sealants could have prevented the cavity from forming in the first place.
Here are some important aspects of routine oral care that will keep many dental issues at bay.
Ways to prevent a dental emergency
1. Good oral hygiene
Brushing twice a day is arguably the single most important thing a person can do to keep their teeth and gums healthy. Brushing gets rid of food particles that are stuck on teeth, which turn into plaque. Plaque is a thin, sticky film that is formed in the mouth by bacteria and these organisms convert food particles into acids that can damage tooth enamel and its internal structures.
By brushing twice a day, bacteria and food particles are removed from teeth surfaces before damage is done to the teeth. One of the times a person brushes should be right before going to bed. Less saliva (which washes away bacteria and food particles) is produced during sleep, allowing bacteria to do more damage during that period. That is also one of the reasons for morning breath.
In addition to brushing, floss once each day and use a quality mouthwash to re-mineralize your teeth.
2. Preventative treatments
There are a variety of preventative treatments that can be used to keep common dental issues at bay. For example, dental sealants can be used to protect teeth from tooth decay. It can reduce the odds of a tooth decaying by up to 80 percent.
3. Routine dental visits
Dentists recommend visiting a dentist twice each year at a minimum. A dental cleaning will be routinely performed during these checkups, and that eliminates tartar from teeth surfaces. Tartar is formed when plaque accumulates on teeth surfaces and becomes calcified. It serves as a base for tooth-decay causing bacteria and it makes the person's teeth appear yellow. It also makes the patient's teeth more susceptible to staining.
The dentist will also perform an oral examination looking for any developing issues. In dentistry, the earlier an issue is detected, the cheaper it is to fix it.
