Ease Your Child’s Teething Discomfort with These Tips

Posted on: February 18, 2019

Children begin to teethe between three and nine months, and this process of teething can make them irritable and restless. Teething can also cause loss of appetite and excessive drooling. As a parent, you cannot do anything to spare your child the pain of teething, but you can help diminish their discomfort.

Here are a few tips to help ease your child’s teething pain.

Teething symptoms

Most children experience some pain when they are teething, while others do not. In most cases, the most common symptoms associated with teething are:

  • Painful or sensitive gums
  • A slight increase in temperature
  • Excessive crying and irritability
  • Refusing to eat
  • Excessive drooling
  • Interrupted sleep
  • Rubbing of the ears

Easing the discomfort

If your child shows any of the above symptoms, these tips should help ease the discomfort:

Teething rings or rusks

Giving your child a clean, cool object like a teething ring or rusk helps with the pain.

Cold fruits and vegetables

Cold items are great for swollen gums. If your child is refusing the bottle, you should feed them cold fruits and vegetables because they help ease the pain of teething and allow the child to get some much-needed nutrients. You should make sure the size of the fruit you give the child is large enough so they do not mistakenly swallow it.

Frozen water

If the teething is making your child’s gums swell, you can ease the pain with some frozen water. Simply put some water in their bottle and put it in a freezer upside down. Keep the bottle in the freezer until the water at the nipple is frozen. Give your child the frozen nipple to help with the pain.

Frozen cloth

Another way to reduce the swelling caused by teething is to give your child a clean moist or frozen cloth to chew on.

Cool towel

The excessive drooling caused by teething can lead to a facial rash, giving you another problem to deal with. You can reduce the chances of your child getting a facial rash by wiping the child’s face with a cool cloth or towel.

Distract the child

Another way to help ease your child’s pain when they are teething is to distract them by playing games. Parents have had success in distracting their kids with games like “peek-a-boo,” which helped the child forget the pain for a little while.

Over-the-counter medication

If you do not have success with any of the above tips, you can use medication to help ease your child’s pain. However, you should contact your pediatrician first to find out which pain medication is safe to give your child.

Teething is part of growing up, but it can be painful for your child. If you want to get more tips on easing the pain associated with teething, talk to your dentist to learn more ways you can ease the pain.
