Cosmetic Dental Procedures From a Family Dentist

If your teeth are discolored, stained, chipped, worn, broken, misshapen, misaligned or have gaps between them, your family dentist can help give you a better smile. Cosmetic dentistry is very popular and dentists have a variety of techniques and tools at their disposal for improving the appearance of your smile. In some cases, the improvements are not just cosmetic. Many of the treatments can also improve oral complications such as your bite.

Family dentist and cosmetic dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is a common method of oral care that focuses on improving the appearance of the teeth, mouth and smile. Some procedures used in cosmetic dentistry are to some degree simple, but others are more complex and require more care. Sometimes, a family dentist may refer a patient to another health care practitioner for more in-depth treatment depending on the needs and preferences of a patient. Some common procedures include bonding, crowns and veneers.

Bonding

Bonding is a procedure that involves the use of tooth-colored material to fill in gaps or change the color of a person’s teeth. Bonding materials are often used by dentists to fill tiny cavities or protect the exposed tooth root. Bonding may improve the appearance of teeth if they are cracked, chipped, stained or broken or if they have spaces between them. This procedure requires a single office visit and it can last for many years.

Crowns

Crowns, also popularly referred to as caps, completely cover a tooth to restore its appearance and normal shape. A crown may be needed to protect a weak tooth, restore a worn or broken tooth, cover a discolored or misshapen tooth or an implant or hold a dental bridge in place. Crowns can be made from resin, metal, porcelain fused to metal or ceramic materials. Dentists usually recommend crowns in cases where other dental procedures may not produce the desired results.

Veneers

Veneers are thin pieces of porcelain, or sometimes plastic, that cover the front teeth. These custom shells can change the shape and/or color of the teeth. Veneers are used to improve teeth with uneven surfaces or that are discolored, chipped, oddly shaped, crooked or unevenly spaced. Veneers can be used to treat some of the same complications as bonding.

Before inserting them, a dentist will take the impression of a patient’s tooth. Before the veneer is directly cemented onto the tooth, the dentist will buff the tooth, in order, to compensate for the veneer’s added thickness. Once the cement is between the tooth and veneer, the dentist will use a light beam to harden it. For porcelain veneers, a patient needs a second visit to the dentist because these veneers are made in a laboratory.
