Eating With Dentures

Learning how to live with dentures takes a little bit of time to get used to. Since dentures are necessary for those who are missing multiple teeth or need to replace multiple damaged teeth, they are indeed a necessary dental appliance.

There are a few different types of dentures available nowadays, with conventional dentures being one of the more common options chosen. According to the American Dental Association, new dentures may feel awkward for a few weeks until you become accustomed to them.

Wearing new dentures

Learning more about wearing new dentures will help you adjust to the denture wearing process more quickly. They can feel bulky in the mouth when first being worn, which is to be expected. They may cause some minor irritation to your gums, temporarily increase the flow of your saliva and may occasionally feel loose while you learn how to keep them in their proper place.

Once your mouth gets used to wearing new dentures, any of the above problems you experience will begin to gradually go away.

Eating with dentures

The following list includes some great eating tips for new denture wearers. Learning to eat while wearing new dentures will take a week or two. After this time, eating with new dentures will feel completely natural.

Start out by eating only soft foods

New denture wearers will experience some soreness during their first couple of weeks. Thus, they should only eat soft foods for the first few days. After the first few days, they can start gradually adding in firmer foods. Examples of soft foods include applesauce, pudding, oatmeal, soup, mashed potatoes, yogurt and cottage cheese.

Chew evenly on both sides of the mouth

It is important for denture wearers to eat on both sides of their mouth in order to keep the dentures from slipping out of place. This will take some practice as most people tend to chew on only one side of the mouth. After a few weeks of practice, chewing on both sides of the mouth will become a habit.

Cut food up into small pieces

It is easier for denture wearers to chew their food when the food is already cut up into smaller pieces. Smaller pieces also place less pressure on the gums. For those who enjoy eating tougher foods, like steak, it is not only necessary to cut the steak into small pieces, but the steak should also be cooked in a way that makes it easy to eat.

Eating sticky foods

While denture wearers can eat sticky foods, like peanut butter and candy, they need to understand these sticky foods can cause the dentures to become loose. When dentures are loose, there is a chance that food debris can get caught in between the gums and the dentures, which is to be avoided. This makes it necessary for denture wearers to thoroughly clean their dentures after eating sticky foods.
