How to Floss While Wearing Clear Braces
Whether you are wearing clear braces or not, oral hygiene is essential. You know that brushing and flossing are important to keep your mouth clean and healthy. However, with braces on, oral care can be slightly more difficult, and that could predispose you to the risk of cavities and gum disease. Flossing can be tricky, but it is not impossible. Continue reading to learn how to floss your teeth while you wear braces properly.
A floss threader is one way to remove food and plaque but could take more time than usual. Patients should plan to spend between 10 to 15 minutes on the activity and use only waxed floss. Unwaxed floss can become trapped in the ceramic brackets. The floss threader consists of a small, plastic needle to reach between the wires and the teeth.
One can start by adding 18 to 24 inches of floss onto the needle and using the needle to slip the floss effortlessly behind the wire. Moving the floss up and down on the wire removes food debris from the wires. Flossing between the teeth is as usual. Move the floss up and down between the teeth and use a clean strip of floss for every tooth.
To remove the floss, it should be carefully unthreaded from the wire. Patients must avoid popping the floss out of the tooth to avoid knocking the wire or loosening it out of the bracket. After flossing, the dentist may suggest using a Waterpik or proxy brush. These tools help to clean leftover food particles to make the teeth and braces fully clean.
Using a Waterpik or oral irrigator
A Waterpik is a device that cleans between the teeth and the gum line with a constant jet of water. The jet of water cleans the mouth efficiently, and flossing only takes about three to five minutes. It is a practical alternative for those who have trouble using traditional flossers. Some types of oral irrigators come with special tips for braces. The tapered tips can clean the areas around brackets and between teeth better than regular tips.
For many, traditional flossing can be inconvenient. This applies to people who were not used to flossing before getting clear braces. Unhealthy gums can get red and swollen when patients start flossing for the first time. With time, the gums will become healthier and the process may not hurt anymore.
People with sensitive gums can try flossing with dental tape. This floss is ultrathin, smooth and spongy. It is thinner than regular floss and wide like a ribbon. It allows it to glide between teeth easily. The dental tape is used like traditional floss.
Good oral hygiene habits while wearing braces will give you a beautiful smile. After the clear braces come off, you need to keep up brushing and flossing to maintain good oral health. Also, don't forget to visit your dentist regularly for cleanings and checkups.
