Missing Tooth Cosmetic Replacements

Your missing tooth does not just make it hard to chew. It is also embarrassing every time you open your mouth. You cannot stand the way your mouth looks without a full set of teeth and are considering your replacement options. Find out how you can replace your missing tooth.

Replacing a missing tooth

Dentists offer three main options for replacing a missing tooth. Patients can get a fixed dental bridge, partial dentures or dental implants. Patients should go over each option before making a decision. Then they can go to the dentist and get the replacement teeth.

Dental bridges

Dental bridges fill the gap left behind by missing teeth. Bridges are anchored in place to the teeth located next to the gap. Those who have natural teeth on both sides of the gap are good candidates for traditional bridges. Dentists remove some of the enamel from each side of the teeth so make room for the crown and then attach the bridge.

People who only have one tooth located next to the gap can get cantilever bridges. The bridge is attached to one tooth instead of two. Cantilever bridges also have crowns. The crowns look like natural teeth, so people can flash their smiles once again.

Partial dentures

Partial dentures can also be used to replace missing teeth, as long as some teeth remain in the upper and lower jaws. A dental laboratory fabricates the dentures to fit the mouth. The dentures have an acrylic base that matches the color of the gums and replacement teeth that match the existing teeth. The dentures might also include a metal framework that is used to hold the dentures in place.

Partial dentures improve the look of the smile, but the restoration does not look as natural as dental bridges or implants. Dentures can slip in place, making the restoration stand out. Also, some people have difficulty eating and talking with partial dentures. Patients can normally get used to the dentures after several weeks, though.

Dental implants

Dental implants are the ideal replacement for a missing tooth or teeth. Implants are titanium posts that are placed in the jawbones. The implants stimulate bone growth, so people do not have to worry about losing bone density. Implants include abutments and crowns and look like natural teeth.

Patients must go through surgery to get dental implants. If a patient does not have enough bone to support the implants, a bone graft will be necessary. Then the implants will be placed in a second surgery. Patients must come back to get the abutment and then make another trip to the dentist to get the crown.

Getting a tooth replacement

You can get a dental bridge, partial dentures or implants at your dentist. Begin by scheduling a consultation with your dentist. Your dentist will help you decide which choice makes the most sense for your dental needs. Then your dentist will schedule your restoration procedure.
