The 3 Components of Dental Implants

It can be helpful to know the different components of dental implants to completely understand why they are so effective as a teeth replacement solution. Dental implants can be a great, reliable way to replace missing teeth in a manner that restores the look, feel and function of your natural teeth.

Parts of a dental implant

There are three main parts to a dental implant: the fixture, abutment and implant crown. Each component serves a vital role in the health, function and stability of the implant, and together, they work to provide a tooth replacement option that lasts for more than 25 years.

The fixture

The fixture of the dental implant is the implant itself, which is the surgical component that is placed either inside or on the jawbone. The fixture serves the same purpose as the root of a natural tooth, and it helps preserve the bone that once supported the natural tooth. The fixture also has a strong hold on the implant crown, ensuring that it lasts for decades without needing to be repaired or replaced. The fixture is the first component of a dental implant that the cosmetic dentist places during the first procedure.

The abutment

After the first surgical procedure, in which the fixture is placed in the jaw, a process called osseointegration has to take place, which is the fusing between the fixture and the natural bone inside the jaw. Once they fuse together as one, then a second procedure is scheduled for the placement of both the abutment and the implant crown. The abutment connects the fixture of the dental implant and the implant crown together to provide the patient with a smile that looks great and with teeth strong enough to chew even the toughest of foods with ease.

The implant crown

The implant crown is the last component of dental implants, and the attachment of the crown completes the process. The implant crown is the artificial tooth, and a crown is commonly used if only one tooth is being replaced. However, there are several different types of replacement teeth to attach to the abutment of the fixture that a cosmetic dentist can choose from, including implant-supported dentures and an implant-supported fixed bridge. Regardless of the specific type of replacements, the final result is a set of healthy teeth that look, feel and function like natural teeth.

Dental implants can give you a smile you love

Dental implants are the closest that a person can get to replacing their natural teeth, and there are many benefits to choosing dental implants over other forms of teeth replacement. If you are looking for a missing teeth solution that lasts for more than 25 years, looks great and allows you to eat what you want whenever you want, then dental implants are the way to go.
