What Material Is Used for Dental Lumineers®?

Lumineers Palm Desert, CA

Before you commit to this dental procedure, you should know all that you can about Lumineers®, including what material is used for them. There are several kinds of dental veneers, and each is made from different components. Lumineers have specific measurements and material requirements. Before discussing this, we should be clear on what Lumineers actually are. What are dental Lumineers and what is their purpose?

What are Lumineers?

Dental Lumineers are typically a cosmetic process but can sometimes be utilized to prevent tooth damage or decay. Lumineers are similar to traditional veneers, protective coverings placed over teeth to protect them from damage, hide flaws and give teeth an overall straighter appearance. The practice of covering teeth with other materials to change their appearance first started in the early 20th century. In the last 40 years, the technology behind veneers has greatly improved. Lumineers are becoming a more popular option for people looking to fix their smile.

Lumineers are first created using a mold of the patient’s teeth. They are then bonded to the teeth with a cement bonding agent. Lumineers can remain strong and aesthetically appealing for up to two decades.

How do Lumineers differ from veneers?

Lumineers are far less damaging than traditional veneers. Because veneers are bulkier, about .5mm of the tooth must be removed in order for the veneers to fit properly. This removal of the healthy tooth may be unacceptable to many patients. If the veneers are removed for any reason, the affected teeth will be left unprotected. Some forms of composite veneers may be thinner, but the thinnest option is Lumineers.

Lumineers do not require teeth to be reshaped as severely as veneers do, and often do not require any reshaping at all. This means that the process of placing Lumineers can be done without anesthetic and is less stressful for patients. Because Lumineers make teeth slightly larger, they may be more noticeable to patients at first.

What materials are used in dental Lumineers?

Porcelain is the only material used in Lumineers. While veneers may use composite materials, only Cerinate® porcelain is used for Lumineers, which is typically the width of the average contact lens. Because they are thinner, modification of the original tooth is usually not necessary. The porcelain used in Lumineers is so thin that it appears nearly translucent, which allows the Lumineers to successfully mimic the color of a real tooth and avoid appearing “fake” as some veneers do.

How to tell if Lumineers are right for you

Lumineers are a wonderful way to get the smile you have always wanted. They are particularly helpful for those with misshapen teeth that are not helped by orthodontics or yellowed teeth that resist traditional whitening measures. They may also be helpful to patients without sufficient enamel to protect their teeth. Only an experienced cosmetic dentist will be able to tell you if you are a viable candidate for Lumineers.
